Secret Saturday Festival + The Tontons

Posted by Monica Danna on Jul 29, 2008 in arts + events, music

If you are headed to the Heights for White Linen Nights this Saturday, stop in the nearby Shady’s Tavern for some local music favorites at the two day “not so secret” saturday show.

All of these bands have played over the last year at Shady’s now infamous Saturday Secret Shows.

The tontons, the mathletes, hearts of animals, and (you )genius all on the bill.

Speaking of The Tontons, here are a few of my pics from last Sunday’s Houston Press Music Awards Showcase. The awards show is tomorrow night (wednesday), I’ll have some pics and updates from that on Thursday. They are up for best new band, best album, and best female vocalist.

Saint Arnold Scavenger Hunt

Posted by Monica Danna on Jul 24, 2008 in arts + events, happy hour, video

Do you like mystery? Are you convinced that the DaVinci Code was true? Do you wish you were Indiana Jones? Would a kegerator look perfect in your home? If so, read on!

SAINT ARNOLD BREWING’S FIRST EVER SCAVENGER HUNT

The good folks over at S.A. have put together a scavenger hunt with hidden clues embedded in a video. All of the items that you are seeking are in downtown Houston.

Watch the video below. The video will show specific objects with which you need to take a picture of yourself (i.e. have both you and the object in the same photo). All of the objects are in establishments where you can find good beer, and enjoying a Saint Arnold while on your quest may bring you enlightenment.

Once you have found all of the objects and taken the required photos, either upload the photos to a photosharing site (i recommend Flickr) and send Lennie with Saint Arnold the link to lennie@saintarnold.com –or– print the photos and get them to the brewery.

The deadline for us to receive the photos is Sunday, August 3 at 11:59 PM. (If you are trying to drop off photos at the brewery over the weekend, there is a little mail slot in our front door.) Make sure you include your name, email address and phone number. Only one person per photo so if a group of you are doing it, you each need to take individual pictures of yourselves with the objects.

At that party, we will draw one of these names and award that person a home kegerator. Um, sa-weet!

So, in summary:

The Prep: Watch the video posted below

The Proof: Take photos of yourself with each item shown in the video.

The Photos: Either upload photos, or bring the the brewery. Don’t email us the photos or else their server will probably crash. And you will lose. For realz. If you have any questions, please contact Lennie at lennie@saintarnold.com.

Good luck!

The Wine Trials | Book Launch at Caroline

Posted by Monica Danna on Jul 16, 2008 in arts + events, happy hour

wine trialsWanted to make sure you all heard about this. Such an awesome event.

The Fearless Critic, Robin Goldstein (and former Houston resident) will be launching his new book, The Wine Trials, tomorrow at Caroline Collective. This is a really neat story… over the last year he’s done blind wine tastings with all kinds of people: friends, family, wine experts, etc, he compared wine under $15 with wine from $50-$500 dollars, and the cheaper wine scored better in taste trials!

He wrote a book about the results, and is launching it in 4 cities, NYC, New Haven, Austin and HOUSTON (tomorrow) — 3 of the trials were actually conducted in Houston.

Tomorrow’s party will feature wine (of course!) and food from Houston chef, Justin Yu (the lake House cafe at discovery green). Robin will give a short presentation and books will be signed and available at discount.Anyway, thought this was a super cool story you all would be interested in.

Sorry for the late notice! Please feel free to forward on. And let me know if you need more info, or would like to set up an interview with Robin.

Join the Caroline Collective Crew on Thursday, July 17th, as we welcome The Fearless Critic to Houston as he launches his new book, The Wine Trials.
The wine world is buzzing with controversy over food and wine critic Robin Goldstein’s evidence that everyday wine drinkers actually prefer cheaper wines to more expensive wines in blind tastings. THE WINE TRIALS (Fearless Critic Media;$14.95; August 2008) is the book that tells the story of the tastings and reveals their surprising results.

The Wine Trials shares the remarkable story and surprising results of Goldstein’s coast to coast blind tastings. Including three conducted in Houston.

When more than 6,000 glasses of wine ranging in price from $1.50 to $150 were tasted by more than 500 blind tasters around the country, the tasters’ preferences were inversely correlated with price.

** Thursday, July 17, 2008, 6:00pm to 8:00pm **
Wine (of course!) and hors d’oeuvres by Houston’s own chef and Fearless Critic Justin Yu of Discovery Green’s Lake House Cafe will be served. Signed books will be available for sale. The author will speak at approx. 7:15pm.
** Please RSVP by email to alexis@fearlesscritic.com **

Chron: Social Media + Non-Profits

Posted by Monica Danna on Jul 5, 2008 in in the news, social media issues

I got a call a few days ago from Houston Chronicle contributor Shannon Buggs about a story she was writing on Social Media and specifically why non-profits in Houston have been slow adopters. She was given my name by Ed Schipul, eternal champion of good causes, who heads up Houston’s branch of NetSquared, an organization who uses social web tools to help benefit social issues. Namely, bringing together the technology community with the non-profit community, to see how they can help out each other. Obviously Ed was the right person to talk to on this topic.

I have a small quote in the story about early adopters, as I explained to Buggs that the most beneficial time for non-profits to benefit from social media is NOW. I also spoke at length about Michelle Calabretta, Dr. Miggy, who’s social media work at MD Anderson, and with groups such as I’m Too Young For This (I2Y), has successfully raised awareness to the monster health care industry, that there is a place that social media can affect change within their organization. Don’t believe it, check this out.

Read the full article online here.

I’m curious if any of you reading this who work for non-profit organizations, and how much exposure you or your organization has to social media tools. Why do YOU think non-profits are (or are perceived to be) slow adopters to technology advances or social media tools? Are you aware of programs like NetSquared? Do you feel your organizations see the value in tools such as Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, LinkedIn? Gimme a shout.
