#best09: my fit foods

Posted by Monica Danna on Dec 13, 2009 in Best '09

As part of the Best of 2009 Blog Challenge I’ll be blogging daily on the bests of 2009. Boo-yeah.

{December 12 New food. You’re now in love with Lebanese food and you didn’t even know what it was in January of this year.}

Me and food don’t have the best history. It’s more like a love hate relationship. I love food. I hate cooking it. I haven’t prepared a real meal in years. I have panic attacks in grocery stores. I store shoes in my oven.

“New food” to me usually means when my mom starts buying a new kind of microwaveable mac and cheese. Score.

However, this year I tried to get a grip on my eating habits (or lack there of). My hair stylist had recommended a new place down the street from them, that provided freshly prepared foods, My Fit Foods.

It honestly didn’t begin with an urge to eat healthier, it was about convenience. The food is yummy and it’s doesn’t hurt that it’s healthy. With this latest trend, I may never have to cook AGAIN. Double score.

Dine Out For Life this Thursday

Posted by Monica Danna on Apr 27, 2009 in arts + events, happy hour

Peeps,

doflPlease join myself and Chris Valdez this Thursday, April 30th, from 6-9pm as we excitedly host this year’s Dining Out For Life event at t’afia, benefiting AIDS Foundation Houston.

Dining Out For Life is an annual fundraising event where Houston restaurants donate a portion of proceeds to local area AIDS agencies for all lunch and dinner sales. The event takes place all across the country on this night, and Houston is a proud supporter of this cause for the 3rd year.

Each year, Chris and I participate in the event, and this year we are so very excited to have been asked to host a venue, and not just any venue, Monica Pope’s award-winning t’afia in Midtown. If you have not yet been to t’afia, what a great excuse to try out one of Houston’s best restaurants.

afhIf you cannot make it out to t’afia, please consider dining for lunch or dinner at any of the other participating restaurants.  All participating restaurants will be donating a portion of their proceeds to AIDS Foundation Houston.

Chris and I will be at t’afia all night to welcome you, offer some awesome specials from Azur Salon, and enter you for chances to win some awesome raffle prizes. Last year we had a huge group at t’afia and it was a blast! We recommend you make a reservation by calling 713.524.6922

We sincerely hope you will consider spending your Thursday night with us at t’afia for this great cause.

Hope to see you there!

Houstonist Crawfish Boil: This Saturday!

Posted by Monica Danna on Jun 27, 2008 in arts + events

This season Houstonist quickly tired of eating over-priced, cayenne-coated crawfish that didn’t quite meet our expectations. So, we decided to have our own little boil and share some with you readers while we’re at it.

We’ve got 500 pounds of mud bugs teed up for this Saturday at Volcano. You might be asking yourself, “Where did Houstonist get 500 pounds of crawfish?” To which we reply, “Shhhh. Don’t worry your pretty little head.”

The crawfish will be boiled Louisiana style, i.e. with the seasoning actually in the water instead of sprinkled on top of the crawfish. Don’t worry about your taste buds heating up too much. You can always douse the flames with a frozen screwdriver or other Volcano creations that you fancy.

We’ll also have a fresh batch of Houstonist shirts and other schwag on hand. You’ll look much cooler on the stroll wearing some of our sweet threads instead of one with crawfish juice all over the front of it.

Think you can make it? Sweet. All you need to do is show up on Saturday with your entourage. There is no need to call the bar, but feel free to drop us a comment and let us know you’re coming.

Houstonist Crawfish Boil
Saturday, June 28th
First batch will be ready at 6PM
All you can eat for 5 bucks

Ad hoc dinner, originally uploaded by CosmoPolitician.

A group of us gathered last night for a dinner at the diverseworks “this old house” curated by aerosol warfare. jeff kaplan (new living) and adam grossman (gravitas) have recently moved into the house.

grossman has been creating weekly private dinners that benefit diverseworks. dubbed “Ad Hoc” the dinner bring together a diverse group of artists, journalists, and friend to the house for excellent food and (way too much) wine.

we had an awesome time. in attendance last night was diverseworks director diane barber, the orange show’s philip marshall, kaplan, grossman, houston journalist nancy wonzy, and artists Melanie Crader and Mick Johnson. Crader was showcased pieces she specifically created for the night’s dinner.
